Zinc in wash

Post by sambo »

I read somewhere that zinc should never be put into a wash? With the all brand and Gerber washes they have zinc as a mineral.....I'm I over thinking this or just wrong?

Thx dnderhead,
I thought that the other post meant it as an additive, not simply as part of something else. I believe there were discussing fertilizers for nutrition.

Small amounts of zinc as nutrients is fine and it is even found in vitamin pills, in miniscule amounts... The use of metals containing zinc for still construction is not recommended because we have no control over how much zinc leaches into our spirits at a given time...

In the boiler it's not a problem. You wouldn't drink fertilizer but a lot of folks add it to the wash, as it will not carry over into the distilate. Same for lead in brass - in the boiler it is fine but don't put it in the vapour path.

I would not put zinc coated components in my vapour path just in case some gets transfered by the hot alcohol vapour. Same for the lead in brass issue.

Now I DO use brass compression fittings because I like them - BUT I have worked out ways to ensure that no brass comes in contact with alcohol vapour.

There are ALWAYS ways to get round problems. Not always easy, but so long as you take it into account you can do things that are not recommended - you just need to take appropriate precautions.

Lots of things we do in this craft are inherently dangerous. We produce high proof alcohol for a start, but only an idiot would drink it in that state- and probably only once.
