plastic drink pourers?

Post by beeraddd »

okay. i'm reading all the nasties on why alcohol should not come into contact with plastic. but it seems that at the bars and pubs i go to all have their 40% spirits dispensed from plastic nip-pourers and electronic dispensers with plastic lines. one bar even dispenses bacardi and vodka out of the post mix nozzle un-mixed. which is totally made out of plactic (hose, nozzle and rubber o-rings). should this be of concern? especially since some of the sprirts are kept along time upside down with plastic stoppers. actually come to think of it, should jim beam bottles be kept up-right to avoid constant contact with the bourban touching the plastic screw cap they use.
should someone tell them the concerns about plastic contacting alcohol and possibly poisoning hundreds of people?
right at the moment i'm reading up on the negative effects of copper with contact from high % alcohol.pretty scary so far! i don't think i want to read the rest of this one !

Can you prove that it is safe! The mind set here is if we cannot prove that it is safe then we error on the side of safety :!: I have also seen some guys keep there shine in plastic milk jugs also, That sure as hell dont make it safe :!: I guess you have to use your own judgement here. No way I will ever let plastic come in contact with my likker. I am too proud of what I make to taint it with plastic.
Dont know what your reading about copper but if you dont mind post a link so we can all check it out.

a nip pourer is only in contact with spirits for a fleeting moment, so it's a somewhat different situation to a lot of distilling applications

beeraddd, by all means, if you have a link to information about there being issues with copper and alcohol, please post the link(s)... I'm sure many of us would be eager to read such information to see if there is any validity to your claim... We can never have too much information regarding safety...

A little copper in your diet is good for you :D

Go to page 100. http://www.copperinfo.co.uk/health/down ... rition.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

If there were any dangers with copper and ethanol, I think the distilling industry would be in a little bit of trouble.

haha. the 'copper' coment was 'tongue-in cheek'. i knew i would get some bites! but i did read it somewhere.
it's in a book i got from the library recalling the moonshine industry "moonshine racers". mostly talking about the vehicle side of this industry from back in the 30's. the book is dated 1982. it mentions stuff like blindness and poisoning being caused by the 'primitive copper stills' they used at that period.obviously un-founded allegations and more to do with the disstilling process than still material.
it has illustrations showing the inside of the massive copper boilers covered with bricks, being bright green. obviously it hadn't been used in a while! the author obviously didn't have a clue about the science behind the moonshine industry.
