I am new to the forum and want to build a elect element for a pot still and was reading on fhe home brew forum they are using the Ranco ETC-111000 digital controller. to control their temps will this work on a 1500 watt water heater element or just for controling ferment temps ? or does anyone here sell yriac based controls on HD (I suck at reading schematics ) can do all the metal work and soldering . by he way I am planning on using a 15 gal keg and 2'''column X 24 inch tall.

The difference between making beer and distillation is that with beer you are trying to hold a given temperature over a period of time... With distillation you don't control the temperature of the boiler charge as it changes throughout the run as the alcohol is depleted... It is a common novice mistake to think that control of the boiler charge is beneficial... Vapor temperature is what distilling is all about... With a pot still you don't worry about the temperature at all, you simply push enough heat to maintain your desired take off rate... With a reflux column the reflux helps equalize the vapor temperature at the maximum attainable azeotrope...
