where's the fun at?

Post by itchy »

not sure if this is the right place to post this... but i gotta ask,,, what part of the entire procedure do you guys find the most fun? building the still yourself, experimenting with ferments.. running the still,, making the cuts,, watching it age,,,, i'm leaving out the drinking part as we all enjoy that.. personally i used to love running the still,, just sitting their playing with the heat and cooling valves,, that sweet quiet rumble of a boil.. watching the likker drip out..all those little jars filling up. i cant wait to get back on the throne again and run my first run in years,, with everything i'm learning on this site i'm sure i'm in good hands and its gonna be a great ride.. so really? whats your favorite part?

tinkering... I vote for tinkering. I enjoy everything you said, but after a few runs I start to wonder if i can make it just a little bit better. hence the 2" experiments in between the *necessary* product runs. Tinkering.... :D

Can't discount the drinkin part. That's where it all comes together...the final test...all my efforts are directed towards the fun of drinkin minus the the things that take the fun out of drinkin.

Experimentation, trying different things to what will work better.

I enjoy it all. And as such, Ayay is spot on.
The builds , the fermenting and the stilling all get graded at the drinking stage of the game.

I guess building the column would rank pretty high, I love polishing copper. Sitting there watching it run is also my solitude time.

For me it is the creative process of modifying or building a new still. I build it in my mind first. I visualize how it will work.
The actual build is fun, fun, fun. Like a kid with an erector set.

I get bored quickly watching my still. Yes even my flute that is fast and has little windows to entertain me. Now that I am electric I will allow myself to be a little distracted during a run. Maybe read a book or build something while distilling.

I find satisfaction in a wash that finished dry without having to watch it work.

I love that I can make better booze then I can buy. I love my UJSSM.

It’s fun hanging out on the “Moonshiners Facebook”

I like it when the run starts dripping. As I do this more, sitting there watching it drip gets boring so I invite friends over and talk guy stuff, play guitars, and gossip about other friends. I usually wait anymore until friends are coming to visit before running a load of wash. We live by a lake so have lots of company in the good weather season. Since my friends got a pallet of 60 gal of food grade molasses for $15 cause one 5 gal had got stabbed with a forklift, guess what we will be making all next spring and summer. Now need a bunch of Coca-cola.

lol.. i love the replies,, everyones got their favorite part i'm sure,, i'm really looking foward to setting up in my "man cave" running the still while flint knapping a few hunting arrowheads,, that way i can combine two of 3 of my passions at once,, prepping for hunting,, knapping and of course distilling,,, unless i set my still up on a trailer,,, tow it behind the harley,,, then i can ride and distill,,,,, hmmmmmmmmmmm probably bad idea,,,lol

Once the still is fired up I can sit back and enjoy the therapy the process is giving me...
Once its finished and the still packed away I can still enjoy the my-time it has given me, sippin on an UJ and ginger ale, with ice of coarse...

I would love if somebody would just supply me with all the washes/mashes I need and I could do just the stilling and all of the blending. Sounds about right ...

I love it all really the only part I don't like is getting rid of spent grains. Just lugged 5 six gallon buckets of corn to my inlaws. Mixed them in a pile of saw dust, came home washed out the buckets freaking pain in the ass.

I'm afraid to give them to the farmer who picks up my brewery spent grain. He has some big steer last thing i think he wants is drunk steer thinking the ugly cows look good.

+1 Walkin Wolf PM'd me about a year ago and said I should do that since we are getting a lot of new members from the NW but as you know it takes time get comfortable and meet people in this hobby. MR is a great guy and already gave me a great hint on my vacuum funnel I am designing. The other bonus is he likes to fish and we both have boats so it gives us something else in common!

All of the above... Well, with the possible exception of aging because it rarely sticks around long enough for aging... Maybe one of these days...

The only thing I don't find fun. Is dishing out cash for ingredients or parts. All the rest is fun. Just wish I had the time and money to do it more.

Recipe development, this is what I enjoy. I like to experiment with different grains and washes just to see the difference in the end product.
