New Guy Greeting!

Post by Alcolicious »

Thanks to Uncle Jesse and the various Mods and experienced folks on here! I've been lurking for a couple of years now. I'm a firm believer in researching the heck out of something new before just diving in.

Due to the nature of my space I plan on going the all-electric route. I have plenty of power in my shop, and am in the process of building a 1 1/2" pot still and a 2" VM column. These will either be mounted on a keg or ss kettle.

Mostly I'm posting this because it seems obligatory before asking questions, and the 45 page electric heating control thread left me with one or two clarifications! :shifty:

I'll post my question over there, and in the meantime thanks again for the amazing resource that this site is!

And yes, I plan to donate to the site. It's ridiculously worth it! I love that the site has a lot of information, REALLY reinforces safety, and is a strong advocate for safe legal home distilling. That's a great combo.

Greetings, Alcolicious...

Sounds like you have a good game plan laid out... We have plenty of information about controllers for electric heat scattered throughout the forums... Study up and ask questions if you can't find the answers you need...

Good luck...

Thanks guys!

I'm going to build a pair of the 220v triac controllers for a boil kettle and for the still. I found the answer to the question I had (wire sizes for the wires between the controller components) on a page that I know I've read 3 or 4 times. C'est la vie! And yes, plenty of info and informative responses...

One heater on a boil kettle and one on the still.

And yeah, I'm in no hurry. I can go out and buy nice alcohol, but I'm more interested in the craft of making it, and exploring non-traditional styles and my own style of taste.

You must be going for direct mount... A poor bastard like me would have to share one between tasks, especially if only using it for one task at a time... But, then again, I do have more than one controller worth of parts kicking around...

Rad: Either direct mount or in separate controller boxes. Once I get more familiar with the process I'd like the flexibility of brewing while stilling. I could be completely naive about the feasibility of this, but a buddy and I are going in on this together, so between the two of us we might be able to not screw this up....

I'm also hoping to brew some beer while doing the rest of this stuff. I'm allergic to wheat gluten, and most commercial gluten free beers either suck or cost a fortune. Fortunately for me, the gluten does not transfer over in the distillation. Whiskey does fine by me, but beer makes me sick as hell. Fortunately I like whiskey better!
