heads, beats...

Post by cofradiawhiskey »

Hi,

Even though my still is made of stainless steel, do I still collect the beats, heads and throw them away??

Yes, even though your still is stainless, remove the heads. Heads are a byproduct of fermentation and then concentration through distilling.

I'm sure I should know what they are by now, but what are beats in this context?

Beats? Never heard that one before? I'm assuming you meant fores or foreshots? That what most around here call the stuff that comes out first. That has all the nasty stuff in it. If so yes. What your still is made of has no bearing on what comes out of it. What the mash or wash is made of determines this. Those nasties are made during fermentation. You should do some more research on this.

Heads and what you do with them are all personal preference. Some toss them. Some rerun them. Some mix some of them in with the end product. This is something you will need to figure out what works for you. But the heads do contain many of the unwanteds that cause hangovers. Again more research is needed on your part.

Try this.

I want to know what "beats" are, too... Sounds like another incident of "auto-correct" messing up a perfectly good post... :lolno:

To show my ignorance, not only do I not know what beats are, what the hell is auto-correct? My daughter got one of those hybrid cars, it does really wierd stuff, is that something about auto-correct?

Auto-correct most smart phones and such when you type out a word it tries to predict the word you are typing. Some times it thinks you ment one word and its not the word you ment to type. Mine tries to insert food for good all the time. Some times they are very entertaining. If you need a laugh go read some of the auto-correct fails. Some of them are just funny as hell. http://www.autocorrectfail.org/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

After thinking about it maybe beats are the same as tails. Like the wash has been beat.
