Hi,
Is distilling school just a scam?

$5000! you could buy so much distilling equipment at that cost.
I feel like it is a scam. Has anyone been to one? Does anyone have a school/program that they think is good?

Re: Distilling School
If you have no plans or financial resources to go legal then I'd consider it a waste of money... It's not like that money would ever be recouped partaking in hobby scale home distillation... Even if I threw away every ounce of distilled spirits I'll make in my lifetime I doubt it would add up to $5000 in costs...
Re: Distilling School
I've looked at different distilling school offerings - most are two- or three- day events. I've questioned whether or not an experienced hobbyist would learn anything new at all in only two days, when most courses seem designed to teach people who know next to nothing about the craft. I think that long hours spent reading here and a few good books like the Alcohol Textbook will give you knowledge many times over.

These schools are usually geered toward someone wanting to start a distillery. Agendas deal with a lot of upstart issues like marketing, distribution, etc. You would probably learn something about distilling but not enough to cover the.price of admission.
