Hi all,
I am new to this forum and I will have to say I love it! Although I am new to the forum, I am not new to distilling and I have a question. Someone introduced me to a blueberry "moonshine" not long ago and it was crystal clear. I have made flavors like this before but I guess my question is how to get the blueberry aroma and taste while keeping the likker clear. I have made excellent flavored recipes before but I had never seen, smelled, or tasted one that had so so much flavor while remaining clear. Most recipes call for soaking your fruit and then later making a syrup to add back to the likker, but that will stain it a dark blue or purple.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Blueberry

Re: Blueberry
Any fermented wash/wine/beer that is distilled is going to come out as clear spirits, even a fast stripping run... How fast or slow will determine how much flavor and smell is retained... Pot stilling would result in a brandy whereas a slow run through a reflux column would result in neutral spirits...

Re: Blueberry
I know that all distilled liquids will come out clear. It was just hard for me to believe there was that much flavor was retained through distillation alone (without adding something afterwards). I guess maybe I am just not distilling fast enough.
Thanks- I will try my next run fast and see what happens.

Tater, i am new to this and have to ask bout putting berries in thumper. Would this not cause a risk of becoming lodged in piping or thumper?Tater wrote:put berry's in thumper will help with keeping up flavor

Re: Blueberry
I believe you can make a flavored blueberry essence and add it to your vodka/neutral and it will remain clear. In my area, I order banana flavored essence from the Philippines and add it to my vodka with a bit of sugar and I have a clear banana flavored vodka that’s as clear as the regular stuff. I purchase my flavor essences as it is cheaper and easier for me to do so.
