Re: Yeast dies
Depends on the strand of yeast, I used to have a chart but not sure where it is. Sure if you did a google search you would find it.

Re: Yeast dies
That depends on a lot of factors... Most yeast will survive to temperatures above 115F/46C and some manufacturers even recommend proofing the yeast at that temperature...
Any particular reason why you are asking...???

Re: Yeast dies
I think I have may killed my yeast in the mash. I started a batch of Sweet Feed last Friday3/15. I kept it by the hot water furnace for a couple of days and it seemed to be fermenting. Day 1-3 the bubble was every few seconds. The bucket seemed cold to me so I went out and bought a aquarium heater. Put the fermenting bucket in a large cooler and dumped some warm to hot water in the cooler around the bucket. Set the temp,on the heater for 80* F and walked away thinking this was really gonna make those yeast happy. I go down this morning and no bubbles at all. Did I kill the yeast by bringing up the temp after they were already aclamated to the cooler mash. The temp never went over 90.
I'm very new to this and have done a lot of reading and couldn't get an answer after many searches. Any help is appreciated.

"Day 1-3 the bubble was every few seconds."
mite be finished.

Re: Yeast dies
Did you check your SG. I am truly amazed how many people on these forums do not learn, understand and befriend the hydrometer. It is invaluable in answering most of the "yeast" or not fermenting or how much sugar questions.

Lots of people here panic on a regular bases about their ferment. Yeast love sugar. Put them together they get busy, If somebody put you in a room with 2 buxom naked sexy hot blonds and they was rubbin all over you, Pretty sure youd know what to do, within a pretty wide range of environmental conditions.
In theory there's no difference between theory and practice. But in practice there is.

90 degrees wont kill your yeast

37*c it will work off so fast it wont even be funny 8 hours i had a sugar wash get from 1090 to 1000 once when it was maintained at 37*c it produced some nasty spirit though lots of fusels dont ferment this high but it is the best temp for yeast to reproduce thats why they love it sooo much

You may not have noticed the pointers? Like cooling the wash below a certain temperature before pitching? Maximum temp for rehydrating or making yeast starters? The information is there. Most temperatures quoted will be conservativ, some will be absolute values..

Re: Yeast dies
Finding out if the yeast is dead or alive = get a very powerful microscope, put one under it,
If his arms and legs are hanging downward, then, good bet he's dead ......................
If his arms and legs are hanging downward, then, good bet he's dead ......................
It is not the matter, nor, the space between the matter,
but rather, it is that finite point at which the two meet,
that, and only that, is what is significant...........
(Of course, I could be wrong) ..........

Re: Yeast dies
bread yeast starts to die at 130f and all will be dead at 140f (55c-60c)
