Moonshine.. why do you get so wasted?

Okay let me preface this with I'm a big whiskey drinker and an avid home chemist (its my hobby not a profession.)

ABV comparable, why do you get so wasted on equal amounts of shine compared to equal amounts of whiskey? And why is the high different? Does anyone have any scientific explanation for it? Is it the different esters that are in the shine compared to the OTC (over the counter) whiskies?

Not so sure about that. Just like you can get a different high from wine than you get from whiskey, or even beer. There must be differences in the ethanol mixture that cause this (other than sugars.)

Although I try not to get "wasted", when I do drink a little more than normal I find that I don't get "sloppy" as i like to call it, with my own as I do store bought and I darn sure ain't as hungover in the morning. Seems just the opposite to me.

I get a big hit straight up after 2 or 3 then it settles down after that and I can put a heap away. On store bought stuff, it takes quite a few drinks to get that same hit. Ive always wondered why myself, and the missus always says wtf is in this shit, I'm pissed, after 2 drinks

Back when I used to drink store-bought liquor, I used to have this gag-response to the first six or eight drinks, due to the high heads content.

Well, that gag-response carries over to your stomach, either directly or indirectly. Your stomach says: "I don't want this crap. If the mouth didn't want it, I don't either."

But eventually the stomach just gives up and absorbs the crappy store-bought, and you get drunk.

With the good stuff, of course, there's no gag-response. So it slides on down, and the stomach says: "Weeeeeeeeellll doggies!" Then the banjo music starts playing in the wink of an eye and the hoedown begins.

I was wondering the same. I think the distillate properly cut is just so smooth you drink it faster or more of it . For me when I indulge in other drinks
beer=feeling of general crappiness and a bad mood
Wine=Put me to sleep
Store bought after a few=feel mellow and relaxed
Distillate=after the first gulp feel energized and good moods
The distillate just seems to go to work so much quicker.

It definitely isn't a placebo effect. I have also noticed that my tolerance has gone up considerably. I used to get smashed after 1-2 drinks of goodness. Now I can take much much more than my friends.

The stuff I've had in shot houses, besides being crap, has been a bit over 80 proof. The 80 proof stuff I make seems to get me a little less messed up than store bought 80 proof, though it's hard to be objective about it, especially after the first 6-8 drinks are history.

Although you mite get a netters drunk from not having as much heads and tails in it.

I remember an exercise we went trough in the military. We had a big dinner. They asked for volunteers to come up front and sit. They would provide them with pitchers of beer if they did. Of course there were plenty of volunteers. They started bringing them pitchers of beer. As the diner went on. They talked about drunk driving. And we all knew they would use the volunteers as an example. And they did. Funny crap. None could pass any tests. Then they ended the dinner with. Telling everyone they had been drinking odules non alcoholic beer all night. But yet they were all kinds of drunk.

One night I can drink one drink and feel good. Then another night it takes 2 or 4 to get the same way. It has a lot to do with state of mind.

Just went to the cabinet for a drink straight from the jar and made a mental note of what I was doing. I definitely take bigger sips (more like guzzles) from the jar of homemade than I would or have in the past, from commercial.

I guess that's the reason I feel it more from a "small"amount. (Overall, I drink about the same amount total and get about the same amount drunk )

Case solved for me I guess.

I will have to say that I can feel a different buzz vs what I am drinking. Some may say it is all mental but I personally do not think so. I have drank for several years, back and forth from one type of likker to another and I can tell the difference(Dark Likker, Light Likker, Tequila, Beer). Drink to much of anything and you WILL get drunk. I think it is mostly what you are used to drinking. My thing now is shine, 120~150 proof,at least 10oz a night (yes I like it strong) with a lil buzz, but I can set down now and drink a 6-pack of beer and slur my words like crazy, and I am a professional drunk. So how do you explain that? <---- Just asking by the way.

Like I said. The heads and tails will make some of a difference. I've had some drinks that have me an instant headache. And some that gave me no headache. The effects of or lack of the heads and tails can make it seam better or worse. The main thing is if what you make is more enjoyable. Then you are doing a good job. But there is almost always room for improvement. So don't get stuck in the rut. Always strive to improve on your makings.

I gave a 100 proof sampler to a friend a few weeks ago without telling him I made it and when I asked him last week how he liked it he stated that drinking it made him high rather than drunk... And that's what I've always thought... A nice clean buzz that you almost don't notice coming on and never notice leaving... All you think is now I'm buzzing - and now I'm not... Like it never happened...

And that's what I've always thought... A nice clean buzz that you almost don't notice coming on and never notice leaving... All you think is now I'm buzzing - and now I'm not... Like it never happened...

This is the best description of it. You feel fine, all of a sudden, boom... you're high. With OTC (over the counter) stuff I can feel it coming on slowly. With shine it's pretty instant, and the buzz is more like a high than a drinking buzz. It's great

I gave some to my neighbors and he said it was Like taking a Viagra I glanced at his wife and she was nodding yes then he asked for more lol. I love the clean buzz I get no headache in the morning and I don't get tired.
