please look at my controller
I just finished up my controller. this is just a mock up .all terminals will be soldered connections. the switch is a double poll 3OA. The pot is rated up to 500k ohms. I plan on running 220. with a 5500w camco ultra low watt density element.
please check my work. im also unsure of which wire goes where for the pot off the ssr. the wire is heavy duty rubber coated 10/3
the bottom two connections on the switch is the load

Sambedded is the guru of things electric. Diagram is correct, as long as your parts are all the same type.
IIRC, it doesn't matter which way you run the wires through the pot off of 3&4

Easiest way to avoid being on a TTB list is to not purchase a boiler, full column, or condensor from a retailer. Build your own.

I just in the process of building my controller as I stated. Sambeded it appears you are the guru of electric so I obviously could use some help with mine. Can you or anyone explain how the heating element is controlled if half the power doesn't go through the PSR in my case a SSR? I understand how the pot works but apparently not the SSR. I though I had it figured out apparently not. Trying to be safe with 220 volts. Thanks AP

The current "alternates" in both directions so the SSR controls both hots at a single point in the circuit... The hot going directly to the element does nothing without either a ground/neutral or the other, in this case controlled, hot... Just to clarify: "Alternating" has nothing to do with it. The thing is that both terminals of the element have to be connected to a source for it to heat. The SSR opens (disconnects) that wire so that side of the element is connected to nothing.

Kinda muddied the water a bit... The OP was wondering why both hots don't have to go through the SSR, which I explained...
