Half run evaporated

Post by planethax »

So did a late night run last night.
Finished up around 3am and had 30 250ml jars full.

Covered with towel and went to bed.

Was very hot here today and when I went out about 1pm the jar that I was airing were only half full. Crap.
Lost half a run!!!!!

Lesson learn, don't leave out on picnic table.
Put away in the shade.

That's a gallon of distillate gone in 10 hours; I'm aired a lot of whiskey and that doesn't sound right. You will lose some by airing, but I'm in the deep south where it's hot as hell and I ofter air 48-72 hrs and have never lost anywhere near half my product. ???

Exactly, neighborhood kids, ...no doubt. At least they didn't fill back up to level with water and leave you wondering how come the ABV turned out so low!

....or maybe it was a Chupacabra!

That's not what my chup looks like Soggy. That's one of the soggy bottom creatures! Rather than the South, you must live near hell with a lot of thirsty angels there about!

I had one run where I lost almost one third during the airing process but I think it was the air conditioning that stole more than the angels share... It took about 24 hours...

I live in South Florida and let mine air 24-48hrs and have never had that much loss,if that ever happened to me I'd seriously be wondering if the neighbors didn't get into it.

Humidity will affect it as much as temperature, higher RH it won't evaporate near as much even in hot weather, the air already being pretty well saturated. If it was real low RH where he is and a hot day, it could happen...just sayin'.

I got a surprise in the other direction yesterday.

The back story is 18 months ago we moved to the
new home.

Moving sucks.

I remember having the chat with Wifey that with moving and
farming season coming up I would not have much time to practice
the art, so I thought I would try and get ahead. As I remembered it
I never got the chance.

So yesterday we are digging through a pile of boxes in the shop,
tossing some stuff out, putting some on the shelves, when I
openned a 4 gallon case of what should have been EMPTY Gallo wine jugs,
and find to my total surprise, 4 gallons of double distilled
Sweet Feed / Malted Barley just setting there pretty as you please at 80%!!

Wifey was doing the Happy Snoopy Dance all afternoon!

Guess I did try to get ahead and just forgot about it
