Apple Whiskey?

Post by magnuson25 »

Hello,
I am about to make my first batch of whiskey. I am using a Corn/Barley mash and will distill it with my Turbo 500. My question is, has anyone ever infused any sort of apple into their whiskey? I would like to produce something similar to Crown Royal Apple.

I am going to make my wash using 5 Gallons of water, 8.5 Lbs of Corn, 1.5 Lbs of barley.

Also to note, I do have an Oak Barrel to age my whiskey in as well, but if anyone can steer me in the right direction on how I should go about making a Crown Royal Apple or something similar, that would be great! My goal is to try to stay away from the "essences" and fake flavor's that they sell and try to do it the real, natural way.

P.s. I am sorry if this has already been discussed, I checked around the forum's and didnt find anything.

Sorry to inform you but your still is a one trick pony, it will make a neutral spirit as its designed to and really nothing else. Your can makes vodkas you can then infuse flavours with but to achieve what you are aiming for you may want to look at making a pot will head for your boiler

As thecroweater stated, your T-500 is the wrong tool for the job... It is not intended to make flavored spirits, regardless of the manufacturers claims... And, depending on the revision of the T-500, it should never be run at a vapor temperature above 85C/185F due to the synthetic components which will break down at higher temperatures... You need a pot still head if you desire flavored spirits...

It should also be noted that this topic is in the wrong forum... Novice Distillers would be a better forum for such a basic question as this has nothing to do with Flavoring and Aging... It kinda sorta does, but not really...

Thank you gentlemen. So say I changed the top part of my still to the Pot Still Alembic Condenser that I guess is made more for whiskey, would that make a difference and then how would I achieve the apple flavor?

That is correct because the fact that he is using the wrong tool for the job trumps his question, IMHO... Lack of research... I've been at this whole forum thing long enough... But what do I know...???

Ok, so say I was using a pot still, how would you infuse the whiskey with the apple flavor to recreate something similar to crown apple?

I would start by tasting the whiskey to identify the apples and whiskey used in the target drink, then making an essence or apple brandy from similar apples to blend with a similar whiskey. Then, every time I made it, I would tweak my methods to get closer to my target drink, or better still, to make something better.

I dunno man. My wife likes that stuff, but to me it tastes like someone threw some sour apple jolly ranchers in with some crown that didn't make the selection for the normal stuff.

Hey! there's an idea. Check out the nuking thread. Lots of neat things going on there.

Truthfully though, you might be a ways off in your journey to be worrying about infusions and such. Lots to learn, enjoy the ride, be safe.

As noted, slow down and learn to successfully make whiskey before worrying about any apple infusions or other methods of introducing apple flavor...

Have you even successfully run neutral spirits through your T-500 yet...??? Have you ever made whiskey...??? Give us some indication as to how much real world experience you have to date because there is no need wasting our time by asking questions about advanced concepts if you aren't the least bit proficient yet... With only 4 posts to date we can only assume that you are just beginning, and if you aren't then we need to know where you're at as far as experience is concerned...

It's definitely there sp. Gonna be heart broken when I'm out of it,lol.
As for the op...
Try stripping it then put thin sliced apples in it for a few weeks then cut it down to about 20% with apple juice and rerun it making a Geist then make your cuts and blend your hearts then use the site dilution calculator and proof it down with apple juice. Let it set at least a month then try it. Maybe add some butter on the second run to stop it from foaming up. That should get you close and you can tweak it from there.
