110v Dimmer for 12v fan

Post by BoisBlancBoy »

My electrical prowess once again is continual evading me. Sorry for the elementary question.

I have a 110v dimmer switch I want to use to control the speed of my 12v cooling fan. Do I wire that switch in between the power source and the receptical that my wall wart plugs into inside my controller or between the wall wart and fan.

You must wire the dimmer switch on the 120V side of the circuit, either between the mains and the outlet or between the outlet and the 12V transformer...

Yeah, that wall wart probably won't be too happy being controlled by a dimmer... One thing that can work with lower amperages is a simple potentiometer... For example, a 1W rated 10K Ohm potentiometer in the 12V circuit might do the trick...
