sugar wash
Here's a pic of my latest sugar wash
Bakers yeast, 28 lbs sugar, 10 lbs corn chops and enough water to adjust the SG to 1.075
A "yeast bomb" made from 1/4 lb boiled yeast, 6 one a day multi vitamins, some DAP, Epsom salt and oyster shells.
After fermenting for 12 hours at 32'c the SG is down to 1.045

Here's the ferment after around 20 hours, don't know what the SG is
The hydrometer is under several inches of blubbery cap

Re: sugar wash
The Temp was up to 36.1C I was afraid it might over heat, so I had to start cooling the water jacket
I was hoping for a 24 hour ferment but doesn't look like it will make it.

Is that a skin of water between a inner outer pot, and being controlled by some sort of electric heater?

Re: sugar wash
Yes it has a water jacket, makes it easy to control the temp
The heaters are big enough to quickly bring it to boil if needed.
Or cold water can be used to quickly drop the temp.

Re: sugar wash
do you still use it as a boiler or is it only a shithot fermenter now?

Re: sugar wash
I've been too busy to use it for mashing, so for the next day or 2 it will only be used as a fermenter.
The wash will be transferred to a packed CM column for distillation.

Re: sugar wash
thought it was a bit high ABV for a pot run alright, making corn voddy?

Re: sugar wash
The cap fell over night, the SG is now 1.008
I'll stir up the yeast bed and let it ferment for a little longer before racking and cold crash.
Looks like this is going to be a 48 hour sugar wash ferment.
I'll reuse the grain bed for a piggyback, then save some in the fridge for boiling up another yeast bomb.

Re: sugar wash
A 48 hour sugar wash without using Turbo Yeast is pretty darned good...!!!
Now to see how it distills out and, if it suits your palate, determine whether the recipe is repeatable...
What would you estimate is the overall volume of the wash...???

Re: sugar wash
I'm guestimating around 17 gallons including the spent corn.
Since my other boiler only holds 16ish not all of it will fit.
I'll set some aside to run with the next batch. I figure 2 stripping runs will be enough to charge the CM
The recipe is definitely repeatable, I use a yeast bomb and oystershells on all the sugar washes.

Re: sugar wash
I racked the wash to let it settle and fed the spent corn/yeast bed, 26lbs more sugar and enough water to hit 1.060
The piggyback batch is fermenting with less drama and much slower. It's now @ 1.041
After stripping, there was 350ml of foreshots and 2.7 gallons of low-wines @ 39%
Shut the boiler down @ 21% because a film of dirty oil began to appear on top the low-wines
Edited: there was right at 14 gallon of wash to charge the boiler for the stripping run

Re: sugar wash
The piggyback ferment finished and is cold crashing.
One fermenter and 2 consecutive sugar wash ferments in 1 week.
There was no tricks needed, only nutrients and temp control for the yeast.
If I can do it, then anyone else can
With a lower starting gravity, I bet someone could do 3 consecutive ferments in a week
