If they ask, why you buy so much sugar...

Post by plaztikjezuz »

tell them you are a beekeeper and you need to feed your bees. I just went to GFS to buy sugar for my bees and 50 lb gets a question or two even there.

on the same note beekeeper supply shops sell all kinds of sugars and do not ask many questions if you buy a pallet of sugar or drum of syrup.

Or tell them you ran out of sugar for your coffee for the last damn time. Or tell them you're stocking up your panic shelter for the end of the world in 2012. Or ask them why they are selling so much sugar. Or shop elsewhere.

I still don't understand the attraction of keeping so much sugar on hand. Ants could get in it, a unlucky leak in the stillin shed roof could make a hell of a sticky mess, nosy company could ask questions. Around these parts, a little 10 lb bag is the same price per pound as the big sack.

I'm not knockin ya, just providing a different viewpoint.

We always kept our sugar in those 5 - 6 gallon white plastic buckets with tightly sealed lids... We never left sugar sitting around in the original bags... These days I'd probably use blue plastic barrels if I was going to store in bulk that didn't need to be moved often...

If anyone was gonna ask WHY then they are probably already somewhere where they shouldn't be, from a trust standpoint... People generally learn early on that when they visit they shouldn't be asking WHY... "Because it's my house and you are a guest, that's why...!!!"

It's not that they're nosy or anything like that; most cashiers are chatty folks, and they simply make small talk while ringing-up your order. It's what they do to keep their sanity for 8 hours a day. No need to be rude; just have a reasonable answer at the ready and then turn the conversation.

[speaking loudly] I'm diabetic and need anal infusions of sugar once a day otherwise my hearing goes out on me! Some people say pound salt up your ass but I have to pound sugar up mine!
And you should see the hemroids I have from being stretched by the big infuser! I don't NEED the big one but I enjoy it!

WHAT?

Funny, I've never been asked twice...... :ewink:

and I wonder why people avoid me at the supermarket?

I just buy a standard 2-3 kg bag almost every time I go shopping at the big supermarkets (Coles or Woolies). Surprising how fast you can build up a collection of sugar. I got no problem keeping up with what I need for ferments. And no eyebrows get raised.
Be safe.
Be discreet.
And have fun.

A little off topic but this is the off topic board, right? :) When I first started in on this stillin thing bout ten years ago, I would go to the local wal mart here and buy sugar. I would buy the 25 pound bags of store brand cane cause it was cheaper in the big bags. About $11.50 as I recall. Back then they kept 4 bags on the shelf. 100 pounds, that was it. I know cause I bought em out regularly. Nowadays I go to the same store and they have an entire bottom shelf stacked 2 high. Like 6 or 700 pounds and everytime I go theres a big dent in that stack. Somebody round here is buyin ALOT of sugar. Somebody round here is makin ALOT of likker! Aside from that the 25 pound bags are now $19.97. Ten pound bags are $5.54. I now buy the ten pound bags cause there almost 30 cents a pound cheaper! But these guys whoever they are are paying that extra 30 cents just so they can buy in bulk instead of loading up the cart with 50 -10 pound bags of sugar. And dont think wal mart dont know that because my buddy went to a different walmart bout 60 mile from here and they had the 25 pound bags for 11 dollars. And guess how many bags they had on the shelf.....4! FWIW I guess what Im really tryin to say is FUCK WAL MART! Sorry had to get that off my chest. And as for these ole boys makin all the the shine I say more power to em. All theyre doin is takin the heat off my hobby.
