Brief off topic to Samohon. I am going fairly well Steve considering my age. BTW that ginger wine I made a few months back with your help is turning out to be good.

Don't need the other crap either. It's also trolling. Don't understand why it's allowed since it is against the forum rules.Samohon wrote:Dont need this crap on HD...
This post is way too long already... I think thats how Trolls work...
ArkyJ's post in this thread is a clear example. Had a bad day? Please don't take it out on the forum members.

Re: Asking dumb questions
Bagasso, do you think dingo really wanted to ask a real question? and not just yank chains? My first impression was that he was serious, but this morning, after reading the rest of the thread, he seemed disingenuous. I mostly give people the benefit of the doubt, to a fault, but I think I read him wrong. He was here to muck it up, and that's tiresome.

Re: Asking dumb questions
Bagasso, no need in trying to continue pushing peoples buttons here... Hint... Hint...
Re: Asking dumb questions
I honestly think he was pissed by old timers trolling and getting a free pass on it. When called out on it they lock the threads down. I mean he asked an honest question in this thread and after looking at the replies he got why would he bother with asking any of the other questions he may have.blind drunk wrote:Bagasso, do you think dingo really wanted to ask a real question? and not just yank chains? Re: Asking dumb questions
Thing is, if he asked the question he really wanted to ask, he would have been better off. He would also have been helped. Positive of that.

Re: Asking dumb questions
Maybe or maybe not. I'm sure if he was itchin for a fight then whatever the question it would have gone down that road sooner or later. Still doesn't change the fact that some here lack tact.

Re: Asking dumb questions
It is well known the parent site is aged. We have started work on getting it a face lift. Once that is done, we will move on to a 'content facelift'.ammo man wrote:Bagasso wrote "Part of the problem is that the main site is full of information that contradicts the information in the forum."
+1
I will add that a lot of it is out of date, some of it maybe wrong, and a lot of the good stuff can only be understood after you already understand it. I know, I know. It is owned by someone else, and we can't do anything about it, but at least it should stop being referred to as the "Bible".

Hey Husker, that is good news. As Samohon pointed out just a post or two back there is a lot of good info there.

Rad I know you mean well and all but I would like to speak my mind like others do on this forum and not be hushed. I'm not saying anything against the rules. All I am doing is asking for the fellow members of the forum to be civil and saying that if they can't be that they can abstain from posting. Is that really that bad? Is this really taken as pressing peoples buttons? (honest questions).rad14701 wrote:Bagasso, enough already... Take the hint...
Husker: this is good news. Hey maybe you can give mods a set of buttons for common questions that let's the poster know they need to read and a link to the info on the parent site.

Dingo weren't you the one who asked about the thermo location? That thread go a bit out-of-hand, usually doesn't happen. But off the top of my head I don't think any "wrong" answers were given. It's up to the reader to determine what responses fit them best.

Old timers don't want to spoon feed? Great, don't post or just point them in the right direction and leave it at that. If someone doesn't mind giving a more detailed explanation then let them have at it.
Funny how Dingo asking for people to be polite is called a troll but old timers giving new members all kinds of grief isn't seen as a problem.
ETA: I was talking about the old main site. Haven't really gone through the new layout and don't know if/what changes were made.
gasso, I pointed him/her in the right direction in my first post and if you aren't happy with your treatment here perhaps you should do the same. Most people on this forum seem to think that the admin (even those on holiday) do a good job. I reckon that a couple of whinging drongo's out of 9000 members is pretty good.
I will admit that it does take a bit of very basic intelligence to sort out some of the contradictions between the parent site and the forum, but if one reads the forum one would be aware that the admin are aware of this anomaly. However, thanks for pointing it out once again.
Funny thing is that if dingo was seriously considered a troll s/he wouldn't be here. Personally I consider her/him to be amusing and a break from the serious issues discussed in the forum. Anyway, I reckon that come midnight s/he will turn into a punkin,

Re: Asking dumb questions
I know it will only get me grief but I have too speak my mind on this one.
There really is a problem here with the way some people are treated. How people are treated here seems to have more to do with whether or not they're in the "in crowd" than anything else, and there are some on here that really are a problem but nothing is done because the fact that they are a member of the previously mentioned "in crowd" puts them beyond reproach. And too those who like to go on about what new people should have to do there is a big difference between putting someone in their place when needed and looking for opportunities to put people in their place, the latter has more to do with boosting ones own ego than anything else and it's the latter that seems to happen far to often here. There's a lot of good info here but the community is quite dysfunctional.
PS: I've said my piece so flame away if you feel a need to try and vindicate yourself, just don't expect a response from me because this will be my last post in this thread. There is a reason why I participate as little as I do in this community.

Re: Asking dumb questions
Having read mud's post I'd like to straighten out an apparent misunderstanding amongst some members of the forum.
There seems to be a belief that there is an 'in' group that can get away with anything. I don't know if I'm considered to be one of this group simply because I've been here for a long time and have a problem with lazy folk who refuse to research their own questions so I probably am. I admit I am antagonistic to this type. Nobody did my research for my profession or my distilling. I ask very few questions simply because everything I needed to know was - and still is - available in the library or, in this case, the forum.
Now regarding the perceived 'in group'. I welcome anyone to look through my PM's to see how many times I have been 'spoken too' by the admin (red shirts) about stuff I have said. There isn't a lot, but we (green or blue shirts) are not in a position where we are beyong reproach. It's unfair to paint the admin in this manner, but as always, it is very easy to be critical. If the forum is as Mud suggests, dysfunctional, the answer is easy, say something to the admin by PM to rectify the problem, or alternatively, go to another forum and see how welcome new distillers are there.
Acting as dingo and a very few others do will never help. Who takes any notice of the crap s/he's been posting except the few who are dissatisfied? The bulk of the members are perfectly happy. Again, I would welcome my PM's to be seen to allow comments from many more happy forum members to be seen than the discontented half dozen.
EDIT: Spot on correct, tater.

Re: Asking dumb questions
im new here, but i think on this one i got to get my 2c worth.
i was guilty of the same thing as other newbies to a degree, walkin in all guns a blazing, head full of second grade science, thinking that just because i had read everything i could find on the web, i knew what i was doing.
turns out i had a good idea, but not enough.
i thought that being knocked down a couple of times was a good thing tbh. if i wasnt big enough to take lumps n learn then i would have given up, thus keeping another idiot from hurting himself with plastic seals and greedy cuts. that would be nothing but a good thing.
now im doing a run every week, and have twice put what i thought were good runs at the time, back into the boiler cos i can do better.
at the end of the day, we are illegally boiling gas on a stove for christ sake. this is inherently a silly thing to do!
i am in actual fact surprised that there are so many experienced shiners willing to talk about this on t'interwebs, but thank god they are! i can find all kinds of scientific fact, and plenty of info on the chemical process, but does Wikipedia tell you what the tails taste like? best way to run your setup? pat you on the back when you post pictures of your brand new copper girlfriend? nope. these guys do.
if the "old timers" wanna give you some shit, take it, digest it, and then find out why it tastes like it does. if you dont like the taste, eat somewhere else!
i guess what i wanna say is, if i gots to put up with a bit of "ornery" behaviour from "old timers", then i think its a reasonable price to pay for the spirit im drinking right now.
which btw rad, came out lovely once i converted the setup like you said! thanks!
if you can find a better forum, please, post it up here. im sure all of us, ornery old timers included will join!
