Hey y'all

just got my first still, a copper 5 gallon with thumper and coil.

Read the foxfire book which made me realize something ive wanted to do for years was actually pretty feasible.

Please tell us that your rig wasn't purchased from eBay and has a mason jar thumper and an air cooled worm... Please post pictures so we can validate whether your new rig is safe before you fire it up...

@odin; i would like to start with corn mash and just make white, then see where it goes. as for pics, see below;

i emailed several times with the coppersmith, he/she assured me they used lead-free solder. I am going to check the product after I make a run just to make sure.

with respect to the worm, i was planning to run it inside a bucket with water/ice.

it looked like a dead ringer for the sketches i saw in foxfire, so thought it would be workable. I know i have to use rye paste to seal the connections up first, but was going to try a diluted vinegar run (as per the new user cleaning instructions) to try it out before we do anything serious.

Yeh Buddy...........that aint the rig that RAD or I was thinking about, looks to me like you have a real thumper there let us know how it works...............good start with a nice rig only good things should happen now. welcome again and happy cookin.

How are you going to check the product after the run? It would be easier to get a led paint test kit. And just check the solder directly. They sell them in most home improvement stores.

Do a little checking. Research. About using ice water. You get a good sized or right size bucket you won't need ice. One less thing to worry about.

@LWTS; I just left countdown county for the friendly confines of hillsborough. never been to the Dune Dog, but went to a joint callled Filthy McNastys in Vero a few times.
@Prarie I prefer NVLAP licensed analytical laboratories and use them for work frequently, besides the cost of the test is only about $8-10 and I need to run some on (liquid from) my crystal decanters as well. Thank you for the advice though, especially about the ice water thing, i will look into that.

Good luck! I know the town that still is made in! Looks like a very traditional southern still. I think some all bran or some sweet feed mash would get you of to a good start (search this sight)! Just remember that still tending is only half of the job. Learn to ferment!

@shortbus; they seem like real good folks, made some suggestions for lit. and online resources. Also your right, the fermentation part is what im having the hardest time with conceptually. going to try and make UJSSM this weekend. Will take pics and document process so maybe i can figure out where/if we go wrong.

Uncle Jesse's Sour Mash will make some killer likker! For a newbie I question the wisdom of starting with this recipie though.
I would also recomend you stay away from turbo yeasts! I would personally recomend you start with Rad's amazing all bran recipie! When running through the still collect the distillate in jelly (8 oz) mason jars that are numbered. I have found jar #3 of 8 is absolute heaven! Save the rest and use it top off the still nest time you fill it. This is only a small cut of the total distillate collected but I am totally woking on increasing the overall amazing flavor created with this recipie. NEVER GET GREEDY with your cuts and blending of flavorful whiskeys! Just remember all the reading won;t replace experience!
