Making Do With What You've Got
If you ever feel like you can't find the tool you need to do a job, watch this... I couldn't understand the dialog but it was still an interesting video... As some of you know, one of my other hobbies is making stoves...

Somebody buy that man a brake and a welder. Fine craftsmanship IMHO.

Just superb.......Really good.
I will never again take for granted my lowly set of tin snips and Whitney punch.

LWTCS, trash canned my tin snips long ago and kept my aviation snips as well as buying a set of designated RH and LH snips. Life is good now. Had to look up Whitney punch though. Thanks.

yes, that anvil was a honey. It was pretty much on the small side, but having a ring like that, even when not properly mounted, means it is one hell of a good hard anvil.
Watching them fab out of common scrap, like old rusty nails, broken screws, etc, etc, it really showed they had very keen craftsmanship there.

Re: Making Do With What You've Got
Thanks for the link Rad.
To add some perspective -- I've worked for the past week with a friend of mine that owns a machine shop. I ran a lathe today for eight hours. Geez -- I am much more impressed with what these guys produced than what we have done all week. I have full use of anything in the shop but after watching this vid I will incorporate some of their methods in making a funnel from copper sheet salvaged from a chimney removal. From the time I was real young I have been impressed by the old-school methods -- could have very well been 'cause I had to make do with what I had.

Re: Making Do With What You've Got
To me the anvil looked to be nothing more than a short section of railroad track.... Look at 1:15 when it's on it's side... Again at 2:14 - it's definitely just a short piece of railroad track.
Great video!!! I wish it was in English, or subtitled, as that is the only language I speak. I would really like to know what was said in the video, as it's very impressive what that guy could do!!

Re: Making Do With What You've Got
After watching the video to the end, I think I need to re-learn the principles of K.I.S.S. (Keep it simple stupid) -- Those people made very short and simple work of tasks, that I would have over complicated.
Here I am bitching about only having a certain amount of tools, many more than what they had, and they turn out a very functional, albeit not pretty product in the end. I have all the tools they have and then some, and I would want to purchase more if I were to try to make a stove like that.
Guess it shows what level I am on the craftsman scale. Not very talented or skilled.

I'd love to see condensificator and those folks work on something together. That would be awesome.

I betcha when this type of work was common among the most developed areas,,,,,,,,the smithies were just fast as lighting....especially on any kind of re-occurring line assembly.....Must have been really something to see.
