Oh no! Another new guy!

Post by Wildman »

OK. I’ve been reading the forum for a couple of days now and I have decided that I know enough to start distilling on my own. I went to Ebay and bought a 3L distill from a guy in Okland County Michigan, I think it is still drinkin or something like that. I have also purchase a bunch of 48 hour Turbo to get me started out. I have my propane burner set up in the basement of my house near our old furnace. I plan on storing all of my shine down here once I get that far. I only wish I had a window or two down here so I could air this part of the house out. So before I get too far into my intro, I have a few questions. Does anyone on here have any recipes for moonshine? What’s the difference between a reflux and pot distiller? Can someone give me step by step instructions on how to run my still? If you guys could just respond to my questions it would save me a bunch of time researching this stuff for myself.................

Well, have I managed to break all of the cardinal sins of distilling and the forum yet? :) OK, I was only joking in the previous paragraph.
About me: I live in the left leaning state of Oregon. I love to fish, hunt, crab, clam and go mushroom-picking with my 2 sons. I have been blessed with a great wife that puts up with my bad habits, stinky farts and compulsive behavior.

I am new to distilling but I am not new to forums. I have been reading a lot on this forum and I plan on reading a lot more before I make my first run. I really appreciate the information and time that so many people have put into this forum. The search button has been my best friend lately and I promise to do research before I start asking a bunch of questions. I have had a hard time sleeping lately because I have been reading so much on this forum and I go to bed with distilling on my mind. I have also caught myself laughing my ass off on some of the guys that expect everyone to do their research for them. They get their panties up in a wad when they are having their balls busted by someone when they point out that “there is a search engine and their question was just answered 15 minutes ago for the 10th time this week.” Search first, and then ask questions if you can’t find what you are searching for. I get it.

I did pull the plug on a Mile Hi 2” tower and 8 gallon milk can. I figured this was a decent place to start that didn’t require a bunch of modifications and they seem to have a good reputation for quality. I plan on using this for a couple of years (or more?) to get my feet wet before I try making my own rig or making modifications if needed. I am not a guy who is really handy at building things and I know my limitations, but my neighbor is really handy with making things and he owes me for all of the tuna fishing trips I have taken him out on over the years :) .
Anyways, I hope I didn’t piss anyone off with my intro. I just thought I would throw a little humor and sarcasm into my introduction. I plan on lurking mostly until I have learned enough to ask informed questions. I try to take a humble approach to life in general and I plan to take this approach when it comes to distilling. OK……..Let the beatings begin!!

Ps…I need to get an Avatar like Rad’s. I crack up every time I see that.

Well, I'm glad I read past the first paragraph. :D

Welcome to the forum, but I need to mention that we have a whole lot of stillers from PacWest and we might be over the limit. Need to check with a Mod on that one.

@ Rad
I have some UJSSM going right now. The room that it is fermenting in has a bit of a smell going right now. I want to keep it simple until I have had some time to get used to working with the still and recipe. My long term goals are to make a great Rum and Vodka. To tell you the truth, I haven’t really tasted a lot of hard alcohol before. I am kind of a sissy when it comes to drinking the straight stuff and I like to drink hard alcohol mixed with flavors (cheerleader beer). I hope I don’t get run off the board for admitting this. I think over time I might acquire a taste for some of the finer whiskey that I am hopefully able to produce. I plan on experimenting a lot with different things but I am going to keep it simple until I have mastered the basics.

No problem, Wildman... I drink more than half of my spirits, the neutrals, with flavored water as a mixer... But I drink the flavored either neat or with water... But I ain't no sissy when it comes to drinking by a long shot... I've put more hurtin' on liquor than its put on me over the years... :lolno: That's my story and I'm sticking to it...

Welcome aboard, Wildman. If I were you, I dump the turbo and go to the Tried and True section. Lots of good recipes there. Turbo is frowned upon here. Also, check out the safety section ...

@ Blind,

The first paragraph of my post was tongue in cheek.

Welcome to the forum, I think we in the NW are growing in number and may have to have our own chapter! A lot of members from Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Nice intro by the way :D
