Several day spirit run

Putting older posts here. Going to try to keep the novice forum pruned about 90 days work. The 'good' old stuff is going to be put into appropriate forums.

Several day spirit run

Post by whiskeytripping »

Hello guys, I'm just wanting to see if I'm doing this the right way. I had several strips I had been collecting for awhile, and now I'm doing a spirit run. I'll start out by saying I doubt I will ever collect this much at one time again due to the large amount of time it takes to collect. But, each day I'm stopping after going all day (5am to 10pm) I stuck a coffee filter in the end of the take off tube (loosely) after shutting down, and go to bed, get up and go at it again is this fine to do this that way? Does it make any off tastes?

I have recently gotten into slow single runs and this method seems to work best for me

Here's what I started with 9 gallons of 50%, added about 3 gallons to knock down to 40%,

My still is a 16 gallon keg boiler, 2" x 24" pot still with a 24" lieberg arm with a 5500w phase angle . Looking for a good white I can turn into a bourbon or so. This is also a UJSM with a barley added

I'm sure I'm fine here but seem to have a problem with tasting off tastes till it airs out a day and sits another day
Thanks guys for any help
:)

P.s. this is my fourth day at it (got a late start one day). It should run out today for sure

you can stop and restart if you want, just wast a bit of heat,I whould not do this on spirits run.as cuts should be made each time you restart.

Thanks for the info. I guess I screwed that up then, I did very good cuts in the beginning and figured that I wouldn't have to worry about the heads anymore. Either ways I will have to just see if I can live with it.

I have a difficult time learning cuts and I have found that it works best for me to collect several small jars to find where the heads end, then bigger jars and then I can normally smell and taste the tails, after collecting I air the jars for 1 day in the barn, then put the lids back on for a day, then I open the middle jar and start working back till I smell heads, then the same for tails. I have found this way best for me being such a newbie
Thanks for the help and I will remember the cuts every time I start it back up. I'm sure it will still taste relatively fine (I hope)

A pot still with a 12 gallon 40% charge shouldn't take that long. 1 day would be to long. What output rate are you running? Drips?

VERY slow drips, several jars have stayed in the 170's proof range

I actually had slow drips to faster drips, I guess i need to open it up a little, I just figured the slower the better on a pot still
And from now on the slow first runs will be better for me I think
I just built that boka and I'm ready to run it with a sugar wash I'm making
I'm just trying to get rid of all those high wines I collected up I had a bunch

I guess I don't need to be so concerned with a high proof coming out of the pot still then, save that for the boka right?

That's to slow for a pot still. A broken stream to a twisted stream would be best. Just my two nickels.

That's not slow for a pot still, that's flat out torture... :wtf:

You're running a pot still, not a reflux still... Crank up the heat to the point where you get a broken stream to a twisted stream... All you're doing is prolonging the run, reducing flavor, and requiring more dilution to drinking strength which also waters down the flavor...

I have found I get off Tastes if I heat up on full blast as well. Got to heat up gently to keep from burning.
