As many of you lot know im getting into this hobby and on my way to build my first pot still doing alot of research and came across this video on how to make moonshine mash to liqour seemed very simple but his mash recipe hummmmm. What a horribad video. I got through maybe 3 min before I started jumping ahead to see the process. Once I saw the sparklett's water bottle I couldn't stand it anymore and I had to FF to see what else was in store!

I would suggest you stop using YouTube to learn this hobby. Usually its a better video of how not to do it. You are much better off doing your research here. And there is a good thread on sweetfeed. In the tried and true recipe section. That will give you more then enough info on how to use it properly in a wash. Not many people mash it. It's usually used in a sugarhead wash not a mash.

It is actually not a bad video but has a couple things that should be changed. In his comments he refers to this site for more info which is a good thing so I am guessing he is a member. He makes a pretty good mess, I would have suggested syphoning it out rather than powering into his fermentation vessel. Also it looks like he is throwing away a lot of grains that could be used with second generation runs. Another change that should be made is he is using a pot still and in his condenser he uses ice and keeps adding it to the water rather than cold water to cool his condenser which could create some shock. He briefly mentions taste but looks to be making most his cuts off temps and doesn't continue to mention taste again until toward the end which I guess isn't critical if you use the same recipe all the time but never mentions smell as a way of checking.

Am I too critical?

all i can say is the guys either stupid or got got nads for putting his face out there in public. plus it seams like a lot of xtra work to cook that feed up, im sure he doesnt get much conversion as oposed to fermenting on the grain, and as said its wasting alot of good grain.

The worst part (besides the problems with his still) are the comments posted below it by this guy : "I use normal bathroom calk around the edge or the lid to get a good seal on the pot." WTF?!? What idiot uses BATHROOM CAULK to seal their still?!?!

Gotta admit. Hank III was a nice touch. But the content and information of the video could be dramatically improved. It's obvious to me this guy still has a lot to learn. I enjoyed the video, but cringed everytime he was wrong about something. I chuckled about the "tricking the grain into thinking it's spring". I think these kinds of videos are why a lot of noobs come here to the forums so confused...

I used to brew beer, and was always a stickler for sanitation. I haven't heard much about sanitation around here, but was shocked at how casual he was. For example, he placed his stirring spoon on the floor when he was adding ingredients.

I'm not bagging on him, but I'm wondering if most people are that casual when making the mash?

I will sit my spoon down on a bench or something from time to time. So yes some of us aren't big sanitation freaks. All depends on what I'm making. But if your boiling something. The boil will sanitize it. Have you seen a dunderpit yet?

Good to know that I can relax a bit. I've seen a few photos of a dunderpit in a "where did my rhum go wrong" thread; it's something I might try later. For now, I'm keeping it simple with a 2" Boka and some neutral spirits.

This is an amazing site, and I really want to thank you for all the time and information you donate to the rest of us.
