funky quiter wash
Good morning, all. I made my first sugar wash last Saturday morning. By Saturday afetrnoon it was burpin' real good and continued until Monday afternoon when it stopped all together. I've been making beer for several years so I have some experience with yeast but I have never had anything just up and quit on me like that. I did some research about "stuck" worts and such but I can't zero in on what I may have done wrong. I used all sanatized brewing equipment, I activated the yeast, I aerated the wort, the temp was a constant 70 degrees. I used 8 pounds of white sugar, 5 gallons of spring water and a pack of super yeast x-press. I know I shouldn't have used this yeast but it was an impulse buy just sitting in my fridge so I used it. Two days after the wash stopped working, I popped the lid to peek at what was going on. The wash looked good, no mold or gnarly things, but the original smell that came off was almost sulfurish. After that went away, the wash smelled like a good wort, clean, yeasty goodness. I stirred up the wash, and alot of little bubbles appered. Also, the first couple of days the wash was working, the bucket it's in was quite warm to the touch. My kitchen temp never goes over 72 degrees so this wash was much warmer that the ambient temp. Any suggestions? Please be nice, my fragile ego can't take a beating this morning.

Take an SG reading that yeast will ferment in less than a week!

Thanks Bushman. I just spoke to a friend who said that the yeast I used may be done. As a beer guy, I would have never thought the yeast could eat up all that sugar in two days. I assume that's what you were getting at. Can't wait to get home now.

I have just encountered this same event. My wort looks cloudy though. How did your event unfold?

0.990, but accidently pushed the rubber stopper for the airlock into the carboy. It has just had a bath in Star-san, so I think I'll be ok

It's done just needs to clear. Bit if you used turbo crap. It won't clear easily. Another way to get you to spend more money on clearing agents.

Turbo yeast + heat buildup = sulfur smell...
