Mobile compatible site
Hi boss men of homedistiller.org I am wondering why u don't support smartphones or even jump on the tapatalk bandwagon?
It makes it heaps easier to check the site out when out and about as I mostly am.
Hope u can cater for us soon!!
Cheers

Re: Mobile compatible site
Hello urrazeb, this site operates off private donations, therefore they haven't the money to build such a "app" for smart phones. If you notice, there's NO advertisement CONSTANTLY trying to load on your pages as well, it would be nice though BUT it is what it is. Personally i think it's nice to go here on the web without advertisements and garbage to slow your computer down. Cheers

it COULD be BETTER suited to CURRENT demands.
Forum's that are compatible with smartphones rarely (if ever) show ad's on the mobile versions.
I love no ad's too mate!!

All good bro, you don't have to BUILD an 'app' to be SMARTPHONE compatible.

This random LARGE FONT is annoying to read... REALLY

I use a Droid Razr and have Home Distiller Forums book-marked on the browser. I often take a look at what's going on in the Forum on my phone; the screen is small and posting would be a hassle, buts it find to just take a look at new posts.

Re: Mobile compatible site
I don't have a computer. And I haven't had one for over a year now. All I use is my phone. HTC EVO. There isn't anything I can't do on here. Works great for me.
When the parent site was refurbished by Husker it was setup a little better for phones. I worked with him a little to get it working better for touch screen smart phones.
But as its been pointed out. All work on these sites are volunteered time. Maintaining it and keeping the wheels turning is a big job for these guys. And they do a damn fine job of it.

Tell you the truth. At this point I don't know how I would react with a computer.
I'm holding out till I can get Google fiber. Then I will get another computer. Can't wait. Pre registered ready for them to get the show on the road. As fast as they claim and a real computer. I mite be able to post more.

Completely agree with your replies.
Thanks for reiterating the hard work that the donors do towards the site.

Point taken guys thanks!

Re: Mobile compatible site
With Tapatalk the app is already created, you don't have to write you own mobile app. I don't know what is involved in registering your forum with their app. However the plus side is that you could get even more engagement out of your users especially now that we are entering the Post-PC era. It shouldn't in any way affect the web version or your donation model. I think that most users will come to the web site for the complete experience when they are in front of their PC, but then come back even more often through mobile. I tried a few posts off of my phone and while that is possible it was enough of an effort that I'm unlikely to do it very often. I know that I would never have my PC beside me while I'm operating my still, but I sure would love to easily search and browse the forums then with my phone.

Re: Mobile compatible site
Here is the money question from Tapatalk.com's FAQ
Q: Will I lose revenue from my current web properties?
A: Tapatalk app is an optional service to your members - it drives more engagement and participation to your forum. While you may lose some pageviews up-front, in a long run you will have a more engaging forum as people are free to post new content on-the-go. Though we also have Link Affiliation (Powered by VigLink) and Donation (Mobile Payment) integration to help you earn extra revenue.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: As a forum owner you are free to activate Tapatalk in your forum, and you are free to remove/deactivate it anytime you want to.

Re: Mobile compatible site
Tapatalk 3.4.3 has been installed. I do not know much about it, other than I received a popup about installing a Chrome plugin, once it was properly setup.
Can folks see if this is working. Also, can people help me out if there is any 'tuning' I need to do with this.
NOTE, we are using the free version, so it is still branded. I am not sure HD wants to spend 3 or 4 years hosting fees (750 or more) to get this working unbranded.

Husker it seems to work just fine, I just had this pop up for my iPad, I went to download it and they want to charge 4.99. So I'm not sure, but I really didn't see anything wrong with the old format. Maybe I need to check harder and see if there is a free version of it.

It is definately not free on apple iTunes. I don't think it's worth it unless you belong to several forums, I do not. And probably don't need to upgrade to this.

Re: Mobile compatible site
I'm on it now and it looks great, thanks for this.
There is a bit of a learning curve figuring out the navigation and menus, but once you have it the experience is perfect on a mobile device.
The app is not free, therefore it really only makes sense if you access the forum often from your smartphone. Even better if you belong to other forums as well. From a tablet, you have enough screen real estate to visit from a browser (Google Chrome) and don't need this app.
I'm looking forward to catching up on the forums as I'm operating my still, maybe posting a picture or two.

Re: Mobile compatible site
There is no need to brand it. That is an option for forums that want their own dedicated app just for them. In the non-branded option, that you have now, you get to load other forums into the app, but each gets their own sub-directory and are kept separate from each other. As a user, I prefer this.Husker wrote: NOTE, we are using the free version, so it is still branded. I know this is an old thread but I am having issues with the tapatalk mobile site on my phone (says the plug-in is not working). Any help would be appreciated as browsing this forum is one of the ways I make it through each tiresome workday.

Re: Mobile compatible site
It may take some time for Husker to get Tapatalk up and running again... It's not as simple as Plug-N-Play... And we do have real lives outside of these forums...
You'll never beat a real computer... That hogwash that PC's are headed towards extinction is just that, hogwash... I have more than I know what to do with... In fact I have a brand new PC that I bought last year that's still in the box because I don't have the space to set it up... And I have no desire to work in these forums from a damned cell phone...

Re: Mobile compatible site
Rad, I have no doubt that you are more productive on your PC for your specific computing needs. However, there are more and more of us out there that spend less and less time on their PC and are replacing that digital screen time in front of a tablet and/or smartphone. This Tapatalk app is remarkably good, better than you'd expect, even on a phone. And you can't argue with the convenience.rad14701 wrote:It may take some time for Husker to get Tapatalk up and running again... It's not as simple as Plug-N-Play... I appreciate that keeping the forum connected to Tapatalk is non-trivial. However it is something that I personally value as it would allow me to more actively engage and participate in these forums given my lifestyle and computing preferences. Would it be inappropriate for me to suggest a funding drive for donations directed towards Tapatalk support? I'd be happy to make a donation to the site to be used as required, but as a sign of committed interest in using Tapatalk. In fact I'm just going to do that anyway right now, and put "Tapatalk support" in the PayPal box under 'special instructions to recipient'.
Hopefully a few more of you that would like to use Tapatalk do the same and make a donation to the site. Much appreciated!
Cheers;
MN

Re: Mobile compatible site
While I agree sites look way better on a desktop, I use Tapatalk on my phone and my tablet a lot. Its very functional, excellent alerting and I dont have to wait for entire pages to load, just the meat of the content. Perfect. I can type fairly well on my phone and my tablet as well so composing works as well as reading in my situation (although I dont compose much on this site, I am admittedly more of a lurker here). I understand also there is effort involved in integrating TT with this forum, based on this thread, so I would never suggest those who volunteer their time to keep this (absolutely awesome) site running should have to work even harder. I did want to throw in my use case though, in hopes the yes vote for TT is not dismissed without consideration.
Thanks to the admins for their sweat and tears - this is a fantastic site, even without TT!

Re: Mobile compatible site
I did some research on tapatalk. I would love this feature!
Ok, I'd like to volunteer to set it up. I've installed various web forums before, phpbb being one of them, so I'm familiar with the software, and rooting around a *ix web server. On the tapatalk site, it has what appears to be a very simple, easy to follow instructions on getting it going for phpbb. It looks like it would take all of 10 minutes to get it installed and working.
Anyways, i know you don't know me, and are probably reluctant to trust me. I'd be willing to discuss over the phone, and provide my linkedin page, (as proof of my tech savvy). Anyways, up to you....just let me know if interested.

It was set up, then it stopped working when I upgraded from FreeBSD 8.x to FreeBSD 9.x and had to upgrade all the PHP and MySQL stuff.
Now it won't reinstall or behave normally. I'm going to have to grok through code to fix it.

Re: Mobile compatible site
I 'believe' I have this fixed now. I spent some time yesterday writing some simple php code, and digging through other code. I was able to track down a missing module (XML Parser), and spent time trying to figure out how to get it installed. I never did find any instructions on the web on 'how' to do this. The xml was supposed to be enabled by default.
Long story short, I made a hand edit to the configure process, adding an --enable-xml, and when the server restarted, the tapatalk forum owner page now shows tapatalk 'should' be working. Also, the AutoMOD of the forum (in the admin tools), is also again working
NOTE, this may fix a few other things on the site, but I have not heard any grumbling about any other features failing to work. There may not be too many places in the forum where XML parsing is done, but there may be some areas, such as certain features within the user control panel, or posting, pm's, etc that may work better (or worse) now that this is properly setup.
This may not be the final 'setup'. UJ is the guru when it comes to FreeBSD, not me. I am a newb, that simply digs in enough to finally stumble across things. I have sent UJ all of the information, and he may regenerate things in a different manner, but now that we know the problem, the fix should not be hard.
Ugly and hard to diagnose bug, for sure. But hopefully things are now working for people.
Please let me know if things work (or not).
