Lethal heads on a turbo sugar wash
I have a turbo t500 still spirits still, done plenty of 96% 5 lt diluted to 40% 10 litre runs but this time ran 2 stills at once and can't for the life of me remember if I removed the heads from the t500 run. All base spirits have been mixed with essences costing over 100 bucks, so I would hate to have to strip all that money back. I guess the question I'm asking is will there be enough methanol in the run to make me blind all opinions welcome cheers slammer.
Re: Lethal heads on a turbo sugar wash
I highly doubt that it would do anything other than give you a hangover. I dont know anything about essences but worst case scenario throw it back in run it remove heads and mix your backset back in.

Re: Lethal heads on a turbo sugar wash
at most there would be maybe 4 -6 oz if that in your 2 sugar washes of meth. if someone drank that str8 it would no doubt do a number on them. as you no the antidote for meth is ethenol. by the time you delute everything down to drinking strenght and mix with whatever your useing it would be pretty deluted. the body can metabolise smaller amounts of meth. did i read that rite that you ran 20 liters or do you have 20 liters of finished product?
today marks the dawn of a new error.

Re: Lethal heads on a turbo sugar wash
I see dome nice headaches in your future.
Someone has to say it.
Turbos and essences aren't the preferred way around here. Turbo yeast makes good fuel. But not a good drink. And why use essences when you can make what you want. There are a bunch of really good recipes around here. That will give you a far better product in the end. With a lot less work. And cost less.

Sugar wash produse very small amount of methanol. You will be absolutely safe from that side. But heads contains other unplesant things so if you drink tomuch you will have more unpleasant hangover.

No cuts?? probably why it's taking $100 worth of essences to get rid of the bad flavors. My suggestion would be to make good cuts and use some charred wood such as white oak to flavor and mellow your likker. Just my thoughts. OMD

Re: Lethal heads on a turbo sugar wash
Welcome to the boards.
Ive been hearing an awful lot about this T500 lately. (Mostly terrible)
The instructions according to another owner, do not include instructions for cuts. Which it gets even stranger when I hear claims that this still doesnt need it...
To me the T500 sounds about as stable as lady gaga on acid....

These types of commercially available stills are sold to unsuspecting individuals with the intent of having them depend on more consumable products leading to higher sales and turnover for the manufacturer. They are also just as eagerly promoted and distributed by sales hungry retailers. The quality of the drink produced is of little concern.
There are even promotional videos floating around that show the "complete operation" through mixing the "yeast" and sugar, fermentation, distillation and flavouring in less than 3 days.
mmmmmmmm essence heads. Yummmy yum yum yum.
A trip to the local HB store will provide you with the opportunity to select from multiple brands, and a range of hundreds of tiny bottles of "Essence", which can each flavour between 700mls to 4.5 litres of "Vodka". Each little bottle will set you back between $8 and $14, so it's easy to rack up $100 and you may end up with not a lot of product to show from it.
I will suggest that what the OP is calling "heads", most here would actually refer to as "Foreshots".

Re: Lethal heads on a turbo sugar wash
Thanks for your opinions guys. The essences are used for replicating liquors melon pineapple herbal etc and as said the t500 hundred dosnt take cuts I've ran it until it stops flowing and not received any lower than 96% when actually taking cuts. I can't wait to try other recepies from this site in the near future when I can figure out how to use the forums properly thanks again guys a big help.

Re: Lethal heads on a turbo sugar wash
It does take cuts. Cuts need to be made on all stills. And all ferments.

Can't se how they've manufactured it diferentaly but yea does what it does with there turbo wash that is.

Re: Lethal heads on a turbo sugar wash
If you are collecting down to 50%. You are collecting tails. I don't care what that company claims. Fores, heads, hearts, and tails cuts still need to be made. The still and turbo yeast are not magic. But that company has magicly brainwashed you into thinking they are. So you will keep spending money you don't need to. On their products. While making a subpar product and liking it. The $100 you spent on essences. Could have made you a whole lot of better product. You are not the first to fall for their lies. And unfortunately you aren't going to be the last. Now its up to you to do the needed research. So that you can start making some good product.

You'd be better off writing this whole ordeal off as an expensive lesson learned, dumping it, and just moving on... There are plenty of great choices in the Tried and True Recipe forum that will yield far better results from far less effort...

+1 to cuwhistle, another newbie that just doesn't want to listen to advice from highly experienced people like Praorie Piss, and Rad14701. Slammer if you don't want to listen to the wisdom coming from the experienced, then you might as well just forget that this site exists. Good Luck!!! and I hope those hangovers aren't too severe...

Which is a physical impossibility. You can't get above 95% without chemicals.Slammer wrote:That's on the copper head the stainless steel stays from 98 to 96 to the last drop 5 hours later
Re: Lethal heads on a turbo sugar wash
Maybe he can share it with the guys who like drinking 70% +.
Re: Lethal heads on a turbo sugar wash
Actually you can easily get such result if you are using cheap crappy proof hydrometer.F6Hawk wrote:Which is a physical impossibility. You can't get above 95% without chemicals.Slammer wrote:That's on the copper head the stainless steel stays from 98 to 96 to the last drop 5 hours later

A chef who tastes his/her food before serving is a chef who makes cuts. A chef who does not taste is headed for disaster and deserves it.
Making cuts is a core skill in the art of stilling.

Re: Lethal heads on a turbo sugar wash
Slammer I really think you need to check the accuracy of your alcometer Ive yet to see a T500 produce anything over 93%, that or you need to temperature correct your readings.
Re: Lethal heads on a turbo sugar wash
Cheers guys will do I've been checking it straight after running then watering it to 50 ish then buy the time it's charcoal filtered its at around 40 so yea thanks again
Re: Lethal heads on a turbo sugar wash
Slammer, your hydrometer is prolly calibrated at or around 60° If your output is hotter or colder than that, you need to adjust the reading accordingly. The higher the temp, the lower the actual ABV% will be, because the density of the liquid is less (therefore letting your hydrometer sit lower in the liquid, thereby falsely showing a higher number). You can use the calculator on the parent site to see this. The example I have set up for you has 95% @ 80°, which comes out to 92.5% ABV: http://homedistiller.org/index.php?mn=c ... 5&tempi=80" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollowSlammer wrote:Cheers guys will do I've been checking it straight after running then watering it to 50 ish then buy the time it's charcoal filtered its at around 40 so yea thanks again
I have run my reflux several times, real slow, and the highest ABV I get is 93% (ish). I can't quote you links, but it's hard to achieve azeotrope with our stills without chemicals. And realize that since Etoh mixes readily with water, it will absorb humidity in the air, lowering the ABV if the container is left open to breathe.

Re: Lethal heads on a turbo sugar wash
95 - 98% "to the last drop" on a 5hr run ??? I would venture to say that's nearly impossible!! A sugar head and turbo?? No wonder it requires essences (but you can't polish a turd). Using turbo yeast you may as well keep the foreshots and toss the rest (they'd probably taste better). I was once making some "shit" that I called moonshine...('shit', being the operative word here!!). Then I started heeding advice from this board and other experienced people. Now I make 'moonshine', that I receive nothing but compliments about and that I'm proud to call mine.
Haven't been on in quite a while.... So Thanks again PP, Rad, UJ and everyone else that helped me get past my crap making!
