Using Gin Essence...

Post by bassinjason »

Just got some gin essence in an order. Never used essence before. Am I correct in calculating that one little (.67 oz) bottle makes a fifth of gin? Or is it less?

You are correct in assuming that the little bottle is supposed to flavor a 750ml bottle of spirit...
You are however not entirely correct in assuming that what you get will be gin... it will be more gin-like product.

Before you go wasting a lot of time and energy distilling neutral to add it to, try putting it in some store bought vodka.

I haven't met anyone yet who likes it.

I thought it would just be some kind of concentrated juniper berry juice but then I'm completely new to this, I assume now that it's just flavouring. I'm interested in making gin though and I've been looking at the methods here (http://homedistiller.org/flavor/gin" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow).

If I made a batch of gin essence how long would it keep for?

The issues with essence is that it is just added at room temperature rather than being vapor infused at distillation temperature... I agree with Fourway about wasting cheap store bought before attempting with home made spirits...

I don't think many on the board are making gin essence like the parent site says. If they do, I haven't seen them talk about it for a while. It's so easy to make vapour infusion (like bombay) or distilled gin (make your neutral and macerate then distill with / without the herbs in the boiler) anyway.
