noise and stealth...
perhaps these questions are not exactly still safety related, but they deal with my safety (freedom)...
before i go out and buy one of those new turbo-jet-powered burners (banjo et al...), and also before i start fermenting a wash/mash, i'd like to have some input on normal and not so normal noises and/or smells i should have to care about...
i live in a DRY county, and have nosy neighbors...
how far away can you hear a banjo firing off...?
how far away can you smell fermentation &/or distilling taking place...?
william...

Re: noise and stealth...
Fermentation does put off a smell. But it shouldn't reach your neighbors. If it does you have a problem somewhere. A burner mite be a little louder then a bar b q grill. Depending in the model you get.
Where are you going to be doing you ferments and running your still? How close are your neighbors?

I second that. Sound is all relative to how far they are away. If your neighbor can hear you whispering or talking in low voice in the same location then yes, they could most likely hear and smell the process.Prairiepiss wrote:Where are you going to be doing you ferments and running your still? Re: noise and stealth...
My parents house is about 300 yards from mine and if I dump my backset in the woods and the wind is right, they can smell it. I also spilled some wash filling my boiler and the smell from heating up made it to there house also. And I cook in a building.
A.D.D. and HD don't go together. This hobby takes time and dedication to learn and do it right and safe.

Re: noise and stealth...
The smell can easily covered up. Just pour some Orange Juice in your trashcan and let it ferment. Then blame it on the trash can. But if your fermenting inside you really shouldn't have a problem. I couldn't imagine you being able to ferment outdoors where you are. I would think it would be to hot?. I know it is here.

Re: noise and stealth...
closest neighbor i am concerned about is around 50 yards or so away...
noise is my biggest concern about neighbors...
i'm getting one of those 1500 watt hot plates, but i'm worried about total power during the summer...
(trailer has 120v 30a circuit...)(a/c takes a lot, and adding 1500 watts to the load, + it's heat...)
so was thinking about a gas burner...
now keeping my nosy mother out of the trailer bathroom (plan to do fermenting there) is where i was wondering about smell...

If your fermentations are smelly, you could take a tube from where your co2 i exiting the fermantationvessel, thru a filter, filled with activated charcoal. You don`t have to activate it, just use it dry. This will remove most of the smell, if the filter is big enough.

Now hold on here. Your living in a trailer with your mom? And not only are you trying to keep your neighbors from knowing. But also keep it from your mom in the house? This sounds like a bad idea to me.

Re: noise and stealth...
Ok just making sure. If your going to run the gas out by some railroad tracks I wouldn't worry to much about sound. Just don't want the trains to see you. But you need to think about how your going to be getting all your gear out there without notice. You have an extra closet in the trailer? You can put the fermenters in it along with other things you don't want to be found. Then put a locking door knob on it. Maybe do a carbon filter like madsf sugested? Your going to need to have a place to store your stock to.

tracks are 50 feet below our bluff...
but the gully carries sound quiet a way...
far as hauling goes, got a tractor with trailer for that...
the (RV) trailer has lotz of storage under tables/beds/etc...
only have to worry about "active" stuff (fermenting/distilling)...
could always leave some porn laying around, get her whacked on that, she won't look further...

have a look at itlian sprial burners or 4 ring "normal" ones, very quite compared to the others
4 ring one's are very quite just not as fast to heat up, but they use low pressure which is good

I have one of these from Bayou Classic. http://www.bayouclassicdepot.com/sp10_p ... burner.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
I can turn it up high enough to roar but I never need to. At distilling "speeds" it is virtually silent.

I don't know what kind of propane burners some of you are running but I bought a cast Iron camp stove, my keg sits right on top of it, heats up 10 gallons in about 1hr15min. and I have to look under the keg just to see if it is on. Literally can NOT hear it run. Like an indoor propane stove burner but made for camping.

Funny for you.
I don't move so good any more. I only have enough "spring in my step" to audibleize my displeasure.
Could drop 20 pounds I guess,,,,,or put the dump valve and hose on my next boiler.

Re: noise and stealth...
The burner noise I can't speak too, but I image you'll be running water too at the same time. All together, I dont' think it will be a noise that is "recognizable" to outsiders. I'd say the same with the smells (within reason). My neighbors smell what I'm doing...they just don't know what it is..and assume it's something I'm cooking. They must think I'm a terrible cook. Beyond that, it's perfectly legal to make "beer", which uses same equipment (burners, large pots, fermenter smells, etc), and makes for excellent cover. Just make a few easy/extract kit beers now and then . This provides cover for carboys/fermenters and smells, siphoning equipment, banjo burners and large containers/pots (even kegs). Anybody gets too nosy...just hand them a home made beer.

Yeah, a gas burner that sounds like a hot air balloon heater might attract attention... Heck, I even wonder about the sound of my stock pot working its way to a boil as I heat the wash at almost maximum electric heat carrying down through the floor to the apartment below... I can feel it in my feet so I can only assume that it can be heard as well... Sure was nice when that apartment was vacant for well over a year...

Boy a hot air balloon burner would make one hell of a burner. Wonder how fast that would bring a keg to temp?rad14701 wrote:Yeah, a gas burner that sounds like a hot air balloon heater might attract attention... in mississippi, 33 counties are completely DRY (can't possess any form of drinking alcohol)...
about half of the WET counties, only less than 5% alcohol by weight beer is allowed...
beer and wine making is banned state wide, and mississippi has their own anti-distilling laws...
don't even think of driving across the state with alcohol in your trunk (unless you like jail)...

Re: noise and stealth...
I use a banjo burner with a low pressure regulator connected to a propane tank. It is virtually silent until distilling temps are reached, then, as I turn the heat down to a nice rolling simmer, the only sound I can hear is my boiling chips inside the keg. When I first started using the rig inside the garage, I was way more worried about the water output hose going to a drain that is at the side of the drive. This was OK when the car was parked to camouflage it, but a PITA on other days. Now I have a pump and a recirculation tank (200L). The pump for the rig runs on a 12v DC converter which is virtually silent also...
One of my neighbours seen my hosepipe coming from my garage to the drain and asked what it was for. Told him I made beer from grain, which is also true. But you have to remember that I only distill about once a month now to keep my ageing stock going. I suspect that if I were stillin everyday then eyebrows would be raised a bit higher...
My ageing stock is kept in a secure cellar miles from my home and my VM/LM/pot rig is stored in a long rectangular guitar case that I found in a charity shop for a few $$$ and modified to keep it under lock and key. May all sound a bit paranoid but the less people that know your illegal hobby, the less chance you have of a visit from the revenuers. Its BBQ time here and I always let the neighbour taste my latest batch of beer. He would never suspect that the spirits we have decanted (vodka/sour mash), and are enjoying while we eat, came from my own hand also. Hell, most of my mates don't even know that I make my own shine and I'm not about to tell them.
Mrs Sam and I love everything about this hobby. She is Ukrainian, where its legal to distill your own spirit. We own a dacha (large brick summer house) there, but still do not attract too much attention when we run the rig. The only difference is, that I can serve it up to my mates, who are mostly cops, talk about how its produced and enjoy doing so without fear of prosecution.
Wish our relevant governments would step up to the mark and relax the law on an old and bygone set of rules that have no relevance in a modern 21st century democracy... But that's for another time...
