I down loaded a virus today. Yuk

Post by mash rookie »

My laptop is in getting a VD shot. $75. I opened an email that I should not have this morning and “smack” it had me. I have anti viral software but it apparently got its ass kicked.
One of my customers always handles his own shipping arrangements from me to his customers on drop shipments. It is usually ground freight but sometimes he uses Fed Ex.
When he does he sends me Fed Ex labels for packages.
This email was from FedEx.com. Subject shipping labels. The email body info was fuzzy about an oversized shipment but it was early. Plus he had one here that was too big for FedEx. The attachment stated shipping labels. I downloaded and opened to see what he had done. Bloop. It had me. YOU HAVE BEEN INFECTED BY A VIRUS. BUY OUR ANTI VIRUS SOFTWARE NOW TO PREVENT DAMAGE.
I knew that was a f..ing scam. It was not my viral software, which I was not able to now open. I couldn’t open anything. Instead of rebooting, I drove it to the local hot shots and begged for mercy. Arrg

I have had luck before with system restore but not always. My computer store peeps are pretty good guys. They built my PC and have bailed me out on several occasions with both my computers. They are a small operation with two locations. They have pried open hard drives for me and restored lost data that I should have had backed up. They are a step up from average geek squad creeps. If I had more skills I wouldn’t be in this mess.

I know where your coming from with your PM to me. I had to tAke my old computer into the Geek squad to have it repaired. Not only was it expensive because I didn't have it backed up but it was also expensive as the antivirus software that was initially installed wasn't keeping up to date so I had to add a new software. Lucky for me the geek squad was able to save all my data!

I got a "KILL" switch sittin right here beside my computer.
A couple times that happened to me but I was able to get my chit together quickly and cut power before it completed d/l ing = Saved.
But there was one time I sat there and watched it, somewhat perplexed, thinking it was my anti-virus working = wrong.
It got me and it messed me up real bad, even taking it to shop, it kept coming back = format/re-install ..........
It is not the matter, nor, the space between the matter,
but rather, it is that finite point at which the two meet,
that, and only that, is what is significant...........
(Of course, I could be wrong) ..........

I think today is a good day to back up this pc. Where's my thumb drive? It is so easy to forget. So much a pain if it goes down. I dont keep that much so I dont need huge capacity. I do keep a lot of files on both computers. I probably wont get the Laptop back until Monday. They were down a tech yesterday. Today is a good day to work on stills in the shop.

Get an external HD with some software and set it to back up every night when you are asleep. That way the most you'll lose is the balance of time between backups.

For me, running a computer is knowing when to hold em and when to fold em. I know my limitations and can accept that. I could rent a snake to clear my drains or I can make a call and pay up.
My computer is a valuable daily work tool for my business. I know how to use it well for that purpose. I dont need to know how to fix it. There are people that do that for a living. We all have a part to play. MR

I got my Laptop back this morning. $75 plus tax. $82 total. They do a triple scan and clean up. First the hard drive is removed, scanned and cleaned. Second, a scan is done in safe mode. Third, a scan is done in operating mode. Way over my skill level. Way better service than the local Staples running a single virus program for the same amount of money. Its running fine now.

I think they should be injected with a real virus. That's not contagious. Let's see how they like their hard drive pulled out and scrubbed. Gota flush out the system too.

I do at least triple that for basically the same price... No one piece of software can detect and remove all threats... I use a small arsenal of utilities and scanners... Trust me, it's not a money making venture no matter how few threats a PC is infected with...

Nobody hates those writing viruses more than I do and my preferred justice would be a bullet to the back of the head... :problem: :silent: I'd stop short of including the entire family like they used do in China with opium addicts families - maybe... :lolno: :shh:

I've been running my business using 100% linux and open source apps for almost 10 years now. I never had a single issue with any form of malware ... not one. I finally forced the family to do the same about three years ago after the constant infections and the cost of virus "protection" licensing finally threw me over the edge.

After the expected initial complaints and whining, everyone settled down and enjoyed virus free computing. The effort was well worth it in terms of _my_ time and money. So we're now completely free from both Windoze and all the other garbage Microsloth tries to pass off as "Professional."

The only significant issue was dealing with the iTunes stuff. Fortunately, the OSx laptop handled that.
