RE: Harry A member here since 2005

Post by FullySilenced »

Got this today: and am sharing this without his permission but do so as a friend would share to Harry's friends,

From: Harry To: FullySilenced

Writing this to Tim, but also to others to let everyone know what's going on.

Hi Tim,

So, we've hit a speedbump. More-like the shit has hit the fan.

Tim, I won't be able to implement your solution to my heart issues. Saturday night 15th June last week, I had my second MI heart attack after 11 yrs since the 1st one.

Have spent the past week in intensive care. Had a Angiogram Thursday. They found the same 2 blockages I mentioned before. But they also found a new one, totally blocked. So 3 buggered pipes all up. Stents not an option. Surgery the only answer.

3 weeks time (12 July) I have to travel to Townsville (4 hrs by road) for open-heart surgery, triple bypass. There's no heart surgeon or theatre in my town.

It gets more involved. They've also discovered diabetes. So on top of all the surgery and now lifelong heart medications, I also have to manage my sugar and insulin shots daily.

Assuming I survive all this, the outlook is...radical diet changes, little or no booze to top it off.

I'm kinda wondering if there's any point to carrying on.

I won't be around much on the boards until all this is over & done. Got lots of arrangements to make for the family. Also got lots of online stuff to arrange just in case.

Thanks for the help you offered. Unfortunately it wasn't to be.

Slainte!
regards
Harry

Thank you very much FS, for this post. I know there are many on this board, who may not frequent some of the other boards (myself included), so it would have been a while before this news would have reached.

Many who have been here for any time, know that they owe a great deal to Harry. A huge amount of the organization of data and library type information that has pushed this hobby out of the hidden wooded hillsides, out into much more of a safe 'mainstream' safe environment have come from the work Harry has done.

I know this can be a brutally frightening thing to go through. I have been through it twice with my pop, and have several other people we know well that have also gone through this. The bypass ops have become much more of a routine surgery, but anyone that thinks it is a trivial thing, certainly has not walked down this path before. I hope the best for Harry. The heart re-route will likely be the easiest. Changing diet and drinking habits, that can actually be much more of a hard path to follow.

Slainte Harry!

WOW!!! Do not know Harry but tell him thoughts are with him. I consider all here brothers. Also tell him that I known several people to have the stents that he is talking about. From what I understand they are just OK. I also personally know 4 people that had from double to quadruple bypasses. Now this really blows my mind but most see dramatic differences in 6 weeks. One in particular he looked like he was 15-20 years younger (quadruple bypass). He told me that he had not felt that good in years. He also said getting his chest split open was something less than fun. I assume that he is type 1 because of shots. If its type 2 that's an entirely diff story. I assume with the ticker being like it is he might not feel like doing much and when that happens people tend to get depressed and put on weight and not exercise. I am not a Dr. but tell him to do everything the Dr. says and try to exercise under Dr. suggestions and surround yourself with positive people and loved ones with positive attitude. Tell him to get his head and his heart in the right place and keep it there. Sorry if it sappy it touched my heart.

My dad went through the triple fix, and though it was a tough road to travel, he turned out OK. After you get through the operation you can figure out the other parts that need addressing. It's all very doable.

Thanks FS, his contributions to multiple forums and his wealth of information is outstanding. I am almost afraid to open the forums or email as it seems like lately we have been hit on all fronts by health issues by friends and/or forum members. As Husker mentioned his free library of written documents is unparalleled and the amount he shares with others has made this a better place to learn.

My prayers and thoughts go out to Harry, his family and the rest of our members that are going through difficult times!
:( sad news indeed!

Thanks FullySilenced -- Harry has been a pioneer and visionary and his work will always be a part of the foundation we all work from today. There will be many challenges awaiting him for the near-term and, we pray, there will be long-term planning to do as well.

I don't know Harry, but if some of who he IS is woven through this forum, he is as much a friend as anyone here. Some folks come out of these kinds of trials with a new and more positive outlook on life. I hope that's the case for Harry. God be with you my stillin' friend.

Good luck Harry ! ! ! ! ! !
It is not the matter, nor, the space between the matter,
but rather, it is that finite point at which the two meet,
that, and only that, is what is significant...........
(Of course, I could be wrong) ..........

My thought are with Harry, even if I don't know him.

My father was in the same situation. Diagnosed with diabetes, then had to have both legs replumbed after major blockages and deterioration. Then cam the heart... More major blockages... Three in fact.

2 years ago now and the old man is still getting around. Finally started listening and taking care of himself and he's doing great.

Chins up, chests out and positive thoughts.
Only way to drink all day... is to start in the morning

Thoughts and prayers are with you at this time Harry. My father went through a triple bypass 8 years ago, he is now 78YO and enjoys the new mobility it gave him. Hopefully your surgery will be swift and the same...

I know i got a message that Harry sent to the yahoo distillers forum saying he wouldn't be around for a while and that Tony Ackland would be taking over his place in the group but I didn't know it was something this serious. I don't know him personally but just wanted Harry to know that he will be in a lot of peoples' thoughts and prayers even people he doesn't know or wouldn't think of. I have definitely benefited from the knowledge he dispenses in his posts and appreciate the contribution to this community. Its definitely not the end of the world, my grandfather had a quad bypass in the early 90's and only passed about 4 years ago(due to something completely un-heart related). Heart problems are very common and there are a lot of capable doctors out there who can get you on the road to recovery. Anyway, just wanted to wish Harry the best, take care of yourself.

There are many here and elsewhere who know the quality and sincerity of helpful dialogue with Harry.
He is a Gentleman of The First order. And an educated one to boot.
I do hope that your operation is a complete success and that you can adjust to a different, but nonetheless equally enjoyable Life amongst your family and we, your friends.
Just because their postings have been cut out, doesn't mean they aren't there, alive, and kicking!!

Warmest wishes,

Very glad to hear your surgery was such a success Harry. You will have to adjust your life/lifestyle, but thats no biggie. Do what you gotta to take care of yourself. I slightly feel your pain as i must go back to my doc cause i may also have diabetes. And I'm really not a big guy so my diet isn't likely much of an issue. I guess i'll soon find out what's what

Don't know Harry, but sounds like he's well thought of around these parts. Best of luck with the post-op recovery and dealing with all your health issues. It sucks getting old, as I'm sure many on here know.

This is really good news for Harry and those that know him or feel they know him through the various distilling forums. Not only has his posts on distilling been helpful but his off topic information about life in general and the treatment of others has been spot on!

I guess I've been busier with real life stuff than I thought because I just now got to this topic... Harry is a devoted modern day home distilling pioneer who has gone above and beyond to make information available to the masses... Let's hope he continues along the road to recovery and that he returns to good health for many years to come...
