Re: Hook Rum

Did my first stripping run. One our to heat up,took off 200ml of foreshots then started collecting the heads at 68% and finished collecting tails at 20%. I ended up with about 5 litres of low wines(3l at 60%, 1.5l at 40% and the rest down to 20%). Got the next 25l ferment going with 6l of hot dunder...

A bit Ot maybe. But yes that would work, half the year. Right now my oil drum water reservoar outside is solid ice. I have a nother 100 liter stainless mixing bowl indoors in my hallway right now, whith a thin crust of ice. Which I'm using now. House hold water....naaaa...only use two buckets a day...

Re: Hook Rum

Didn't make it clear in my original article, but it may not be necessary to add calcium carbonate. Depends on a bunch of factors. Blackstrap molasses should already have enough calcium in it for yeast nutrient, any extra you add is just to adjust the pH, so only add it if the pH goes down too far f...

Re: Hook Rum

I'm going to start a batch of Hook Rum, this will be my first lot of flavour spirit. From reading all the different Rum recipes this sounds like a good place to start. Got 20l of Blackstrap Molasses for $15 and a 1kg of Calcium carbonate for $2 from a local Rural suplier. I havn't been able to find ...

Re: Blackstrap vs Fancy Molasses showdown

Well, I took the rum off oak and bottled it. Here are the contenders bottled at 40% ABV http://datalore.ca/sandbox//ZZ34D25016.jpg Fancy on the left, blackstrap on the right. The fancy molasses rum is quite comparable to Appleton. The Appleton is slightly more refined and has a better 'nose' to it....

Re: lazer thermometer

I have had one for a long time. Since I had it already I tried to find a way to use it for stillin' but no good. Trying to get a read on the pot or on the column returns readings much lower than the real temp of either the beer in the pot or the vapor in the column. Found the same with mine, side o...

Re: My Pot Still

My parrot is very similar, because of the shape I get an airlock in it that I solve by forcing air back through as it is filling up otherwise it leaks out the intake. Also what did you use for the base of your parrot looks very nice? The parrot works ok with water, have not tried it with spirit yet...

My Pot Still

Here is a pot still I have just knocked up and a Parrot. Have not tried it yet but would like to do some UJSSM and Hook rum in the future after doing a few more runs on the Boka. :D http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z239/mozzie26/100_3146Medium.jpg http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z239/mozzie26/1...

Re: The Bok Club

Did my first run with this still, of Bird Watchers. Got about 2.8l of hearts at 94% and another 700ml of heads and tails. The Boka ran nice and predictable, five hours from switch on to switch off. One hour to heat the 26l wash, 1/2 an hour of full reflux then 3 1/2 hours of collecting spirits. Had ...

mozzie, Is that pump quiet and if so, what type and flow rate is it? DocDave Pump makes a bit of noise( about as load as a car idling). Got it off ebay for $35AUS plus postage. Pumps way more then the still requires, I just have about 80% flowing back to the tank so the pump doesn't get loaded up. ...

Looking at the MSDS of Bakers Soldering Fluid it doesn't look to bad, just a corrosive liquid, no carcinogens.
Yeah that other solder does seem expansive but you don't really use that much of it.

Bunnings have it. Look in the tool section near the propane touches. There is also flux to suit.

Moz, I won a 18 meter roll on ebay (55.00 including postage) and got another part roll today at the scrap merchant (it is brand new with fingerprints the only mark on it). Thanks Mozzie...yeah the copper I can get is 0.8mm wall should that be harder or easier to wind without kinking? Re: Made a start

No need to pack with salt for 1/4" 0.9mm tubing. The tubing comes annealed already. Make sure you keep it coiled up in the roll when winding the coil. The more you bend it the harder it gets and the harder it will be to make a nice neat coil. I use a piece of 16mm curtain rod(you could use 16mm...

Re: Urn Boiler + Column Length plan check.

I bought one of those cheap urn's from ebay. It really is a bit flimsy. I will try and use it until I can find something else. Was thinking of a 36l stock pot but may be better to find a keg.
Anyone know where to get a keg near Brisbane or the Sunshine Coast Qld?

Hey Mozz, I'm from Aus also and I know how hard it is to find copper stuff unless you want to pay an arm and a leg. How much 1/4" tubing did you need to do that condensor? Oh also, where did you get your 1/4" from? How much was it. Cheapest I can find is $40 for 18m coil. I need to do one...
