Retirement Day

Post by beelah »

Well today was my last day of work!!! I pulled the plug and I am now joining the ranks of the unemployed. And I am feeling pretty good about it too.

Six years ago I had a major life incident with a major heart atttack, but with the help of the paramedics and a great new angioplasty proceedure I pulled through and made a fine recovery. Wasn't sure back then if I could stick it out six more yeares, but with a positive attitude and not letting myself get too excited over things I was doing; a bit of TiIa Chi; lots of exercise and of course a dram or two a day of my own white dog, I have made it and I am looking forward to the rest of my life.

I sold my house in the city and I am inthe preocess of moving to a place on the west coast. Semi-rural, with lots of trees, big lots and the Teepee's are far apart as a good Metis friend of mine tells me.

Tonight we are cooking up some lamb, opening some bubbly and also a bottle of my dad's white lightening I have been saving for 11 years. He gave it to me then and passed away 2 months later, so I decided to keep it until I retired.

Once I get settled in I will have more time to be on here and let you all know how retirement is going

 congrats...now relax and put your health first!

as for me, i dont know how much longer i can stay retired. i have a interview for a offshore job as a medic/saftey guy next week. the money is right and the job is 14 days on/14 off. i would like that shift. its really, if i can deal with people anymore as a subordinate, ive become quite independent.

Congratulations and enjoy your time, you will wonder how you had time to work. I retired 5 years ago but they kept hiring me back as a retire rehire for three years. I am eligible for social security in September which will help supplement my income. Like what was mentioned earlier try to find something to keep you busy, for me it was not a problem (golf, fishing, boating, making furniture, and of course this great hobby).

What the hell is "GOLF " ??????????????
That's kinda like basketball isn't it, puttin a ball in a hole ???????
LOL, just kidin, I don't do it, just ain't never attracted me.
We used to (as high-schoolers) go down to the driving range and hit balls,
but, we'd always try and hit em into the orange grove next door and go
find em, take em home as purloined trophies................
Naw, never been attracted to golf, but, hey, to each his own ......

I'm just having a nice time tonight, enjoying my friends here on the forum.............
(Don't pay me no mind )..............

I 'retired' about 15 years ago owing to illness and while I sometimes get a bit restless all I have to do is to remember what life was like pre-retirement and I feel great again. We sold our city house, moved to the country where we went on weekends and built a small, simple home, and live a very active social life.

Enjoy it beelah, it will add many pleasant years to your life.

Thanks for al the well wishes guys!!! As for keeping busy, I have lots to do, as we have a house and a cottage on the property and the plan is to run a B&B out of the cottage during the summer months.

As for hobbies I do woodworking, guitar building, bow making( the kind you shot) to name just a few, besides this hobbie.

I also want to do a bit more golfing and fishing as well a maybe a bit of hunting to fill up the freezer.

After 27 years in a high stress type job I may even want to try may hand at being a bag boy or barista on a part time basis.

You let me know when you can make a latte without scorching the milk and can pull a perfect shot. I will come visit. By the way that job can be stressful at times to. Been around that business for going on 15 years now. Certain people by coffee like that. And they are hard to deal with.

Good luck. Have fun.

beelah if you are into golf i would recommend getting a job in the cart shed at a course. Extremely low stress and the golf comes free.

That place is a little south of the pacnw, think Mendocino. I tried a drum circle one, it messed my head up so bad I had to go cut down a tree to make things right with the world.

Seriously congratulations, I can't wait to retire one day. When I do I'm going to drink, shoot golf balls, chase pussy all day long, and finish the list.

congratulations, I envy the hell out of you my friend. I only dream of the day I can stop going to the papermill and work only in my shop. I trully love working in my shop but I have been going to the paper mill for 34 years. I always smile when I know of someone retiring. Enjoy your life my friend. I applaud you.

you guys are all right, but is about the change and the ability to say F--ck -it when it anit fun or the boss is an ass because you have a paycheque coming in and dont have to do anything to get it. It gives you options and the abitlity to take chances that most people dont take.

Not trying to sound tough, 'cause I ain't, but I still remember with some satisfaction, the last two times I told my last two bosses to hit the road. Didn't want to have to say it a third time, so I moved on. Life's a little tougher now, but I'm freer and happier. Now, I only get out what I put in. Simple. Good luck to you, beelah.

This is what I used to tell all of the young new employees starting out. It is great to have a new car or a new house but start putting away funds for retirement. Most of the people I worked many years with did not do this and thus when they retired, with the cost of health care and the cut in pay they had to take on new jobs or at least part time work. I am not smarter than those folks but had a great investment advisor it is nice to truly enjoy retirement and have the health and finances to still do the things I want to do in life! Actually there are plenty. Several around the spokane/Couer d'Alene area, & a few in Tacoma that I know of.
